- Coin Investing - Part 1It's a clear fact that the coin market moves in cycles. Both internal and external forces cause this cyclical behavior. Internal forces are constantly working within the rare coin investing market…let's take a look at the ones that matter the most to investors.
- Coin Investing - Part 2There are about 100 people in this country that truly know U.S. rare coin values. The other dealers are limited by their own prejudices, narrow perspective and/or lack of knowledge. All of their limited points of view are reflected in their advertising, both printed and spoken. So be wary of all you read and hear. Remember, most dealers have a limited knowledge of the value of rare coins, so trust your own instincts and arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can.
- Coin Investing - Part 3I have compiled a rare coin price list that I feel represents the rare coin market's 10 best bets for short-term, medium-term and long-term potential. Let's call it "The Top 10 All-Time Rare Coin Price List." These are the top 10 quality examples from the five most active, most liquid, most popular, and best performing areas of the rare coins market. Here are the criteria I used for my list:
- Collecting Gold CoinsCollecting gold coins can be a fascinating hobby as well as a fruitful one but it is very important to keep in mind several factors when collecting gold coins.
- Counterfeit CoinsUnfortunately, counterfeit coins do exist. There are two main categories of counterfeit coins, which I will call "copies" and "fakes", to easily distinguish the two. The one to worry about if you are collecting bullion coins is the fakes, but the copies are an issue if you collect older rare gold coins.
- Key Date CoinsKey-date coins are important to completing a set of coins. They are coins with either the lowest mintages or lowest survival rates for a particular series. Key dates may help draw interest to a series. The Jefferson 5-cent coin has several low mintage key-date coins: 1938-D, 1938-S, 1939-D, 1939-S and 1950-S.
- Toned CoinsWhile grading is perhaps the most hotly debated topic in American numismatics, there is another issue that can lead to much discussion pro and con. This is the subject of toning on coins. It seems that every few years someone writes an article or letter to the editor attempting to warn collectors away from toned coins. This is usually answered almost immediately by a number of responses in defense of naturally toned coins. Even so, the long-term effect of negative articles on toning has been to plant a seed of doubt in the minds of many coin dealers and collectors. There are some who refuse to buy toned coins or do so reluctantly, and I believe this is a misguided policy.
- U.S. Coin Identification ChartThis table is a guideline to help you identify your U.S. coins, and does not include varieties, patterns, or extremely rare issues.
- U.S. Mint MarksMint marks date from the days of ancient Greece and Rome. The practice was inaugurated in the United States by an Act of March 3, 1835, which established the first branch mints in this country. This Act provided that the Director of the Mint prescribe regulations for identifying the coins stamped at each institution, thus assuring central control of all coinage so that production from the different branches of the establishment should be exactly standard. The use of a mint mark on branch Mint coins also insured recognition of the Mint of issue when received in circulation or returned to the Mint. Thus responsibility for the coinage was established. Currently, all circulating coinage produced at the Philadelphia Mint has a "P" mint mark except for the one-cent coin, or "penny."
